I finally got a phone call from my mother tonight! Well, actually, she called my cell phone (from
her cell phone) so the correct number would register and then hung up, and then when I realized who'd called, I redialed on the land line. And there was a good reception! No getting cut off every 30 seconds like before.
So, basically she's fine, and so is her cottage and also my uncle's house. The storm lasted for about six hours, from at night to early morning. There was water seepage under the door and leakage from the roof, but nothing was seriously damaged. A sturdy little concrete block, is her cottage. The banana trees around her, however, were blown down by the wind, which she said was the worst part. She took photos of the surrounding area before and after the storm to compare. There was no electricity for six days afterward. I asked her how she survived that, but it was no big deal (?!). Her food was limited and spoiled, so she gave most of it to the stray dogs. People have been warned not to eat the fish, because in the town next to hers, dead bodies -- from the local flooded cemetery -- have washed up on the shores, so, yeah, ew. And now she said that "dragons" are living in the space between the roof and the ceiling of her cottage. By "dragons," she means
bayawaks, or little Asian water monitors. They usually live in trees, but now the trees are gone, so her roof is their higher ground. NOT PLEASANT.
Other towns just north of her (like the one with the flooded cemetery) were hit the hardest, especially in the mountainous regions, so she was very, very lucky, what with being close to the sea. Whew.
And, well, apparently life goes on, like it does. She celebrated her birthday on Sunday in the city at a hotel, complements of my aunt, her sister. And today (it was 11:30 p.m. here when she called, 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning over there) she's going to a wedding, some relative of my grandmother's. Oh, and two of my cousins (grown man and woman) got into a fight with each other and my mother was "sort of" the referee and bruises were had all around. DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY: I HAS IT. You have
no idea. Good thing they're all
over there. Freakin' crazy Filipinos.
So, in any case, yay. Relieved. Like my mood icon says.
